Online Course Details:

This basic course is composed of the first seven modules common to two bachelor courses, given at the EPFL in mechanical engineering and civil engineering.

This course is a first introduction to fluid mechanics. We will first discuss the physical properties of fluids: the states of matter and the notion of viscosity. A chapter will be dedicated to surface tension and capillarity. We will then introduce the concept of similarity and the use of dimensionless numbers. We will then consider the statics of fluids through the law of hydrostatics. The dynamics of the fluids will be approached first by the kinematics. 

Then, we will deal with balance equations including an application of the conservation theorem of kinetic energy: the Bernoulli theorem. In the last one, we will show that this relatively simple theorem makes it possible to explain and calculate flows such as those observed in rivers. The videos of the course will be enriched with videos of experiences that will illustrate the key concepts and quizzes to test your intuition and your knowledge. The last module will allow you to remote control a hydraulic experiment that takes place in EPFL laboratories.

Then, we will deal with balance equations, including an application of the conservation of kinetic energy: the Bernoulli theorem. In the last chapter, we will show that this relatively simple theorem allows describing river flows. The reading videos will be complemented by videos of experiments and formative tests. This module will also be available at the EPFL laboratories.
